Electronic Press Kit 2019
It is said that given the right conditions, anything can happen. It's no wonder that seemingly small coincidences coalesced within a very specific time window at a very specific geographical location in western Canada to give rise to the sonic phenomenon known as DIVINITY.
While singer/guitarist, Sean Jenkins, was still in high school, jamming in his parents basement with friends in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, his life path crossed with guitarist, James Duncan, creating the solid foundation DIVINITY would later come to rest on. Leaving the comforts of their rehearsal space to test their skills in a live setting, the Canadian natives made their on-stage debut by playing live "Battle of the Bands" shows in Calgary. Several years and several line-up changes later, the chemistry created by the addition of drummer, Brett Duncan, and bass player/singer, Jeff Waite, prompted the band to record their five-song Intensify EP. A year or two after their EP release, the band started to see more change was required to achieve the sound they were looking for. Deciding on a dual guitar approach, Sacha Laskow was recruited into the band's ranks, and when Nick Foster was enlisted to handle bass duties, DIVINITY had at last found their missing elements.
Brought together by serendipity and gifted with the sight to see the necessity of and place for variety, a surging creativity has always fueled these talented, similarly-minded musicians. Armed with his own arsenal of growls, high-pitched screams, and melodic clean vocals, founding DIVINITY member and lead singer Sean Jenkins had successfully overseen the amalgamation of multiple genres: a crushing thrash attitude with complex progressive metal arrangements and brutal death metal overtones. The resulting compositions are devastating. The poise of each song's shifting time signatures and their unpredictable rhythmic insanities alone will easily qualify DIVINITY's first album, Allegory, as one of the more memorable aural assaults of 2007.
Just 4 months after releasing Allegory independently, the band was approached by major label, Nuclear Blast Records, with a record deal offer already on the table. DIVINITY was about to take a huge leap into the world wide heavy metal scene and called a lawyer and jumped in head first. This period was a very exciting and eye-opening experience in countless ways for the band. The guys were now talking with all kinds of major players in many different facets of the music industry. Releasing music videos, doing interviews with people from around the world, talking to booking agents, band managers, entertainment lawyers, the list went on and on for the numerous amazing things happening for DIVINITY. A huge learning curve also became apparent along with an even bigger struggle to find financial support to run the ever growing business side of things.
The band percevered and managed to jump on one of the greatest Death Metal festival tours, Summer Slaughter Canada, in 2008 featuring Necrophagist and Dying Fetus as headliners. These were some of the most memorable and most exciting shows to date. Things were really heating up for the band and they knew it was time to get back in the studio and pump out another great record to keep the momentum going.
In 2009, DIVINITY hit the studio and started to create their follow up full-length album, The Singularity. The band and Nuclear Blast parted ways but was able to work out a new record deal with UK based label, Candlelight Reocrds, for the new album.
Featuring guest death vocals by long-time friend and past bass player, Jeff Waite, and harmony vocals by Jerrod Maxwell-Lyster (Every Hour Kills), The Singularity's intricate riffs, plunging grooves, and melodic passages can carry you through the expansive landscape of the soul. Lyrically tackling the themes of substance abuse, the turmoil of relationships, survival in the midst of adversity, the chaos of existence and humanity's battle against technology, Jenkins explores the parameters of the human voice while capable shredders James Duncan and Sacha Laskow weave their unyielding riffs and solos throughout as the rhythm section of Brett Duncan and Nick Foster aptly demonstrates a very feral meticulousness. 'Transformation', 'Beg to Consume', and 'Emergent' all exhibit DIVINITY's dynamic and ferocious range.
In 2010, After coming home from a long distance Canadian tour, totalling over 11,000 kilometers of driving on that tour alone, the band had started to hit a wall with how to progress forward. Much of the bands financial support had been exhausted along with the overall attitude of the band. It became apparent the band needed to take a break. In 2011, the members of DIVINITY, for the first time in their entire career, took an actual break from playing and writing and putting the band itself on hiatus. Sacha Laskow decided to move on in another direction starting his current band, Every Hour Kills. The others also went in their own directions but kept in touch.
It wasn't too long until the itch to play music could not be tolerated any longer. In early 2012, founding members, Sean Jenkins and Jame Duncan, decided it was time to bring the band back but with a fresh attitude based on the roots of why the band had found their success; the simple love and passion to play killer heavy metal music. That's it. It's that simple.
This new type of thinking spawned the idea of doing a Trilogy concept album. The idea was to create 3 EP albums consisting of 4 songs that would contain lyrical and musical themes based on concept story. The band had created a concept and started building song ideas and storyline content. The Immortalist Trilogy was born and began to take shape.
Adding in past bass player, Jeff Waite, as a 2nd vocalist really changed the dynamic of the band. This would lead to further changing the sound and evolving the band's direction.
In 2015, Nick Foster decided to part ways with the band. It was tough to see Nick move on but the band was happy to have him as the DIVINITY bass player through some of our strongest and toughest times of the band's career. He will always be a brother to them.
In early 2016, DIVINITY relased the second part to The Immortalist Trilogy and couldn't be more excited to unleash their 4 new songs as well as finish writing and recording of part 3! DIVINITY was able to find a new bass player, Keith Branston, who has been a long-time fan of the band and also plays guitar in his own band called, The Archon Prophecy.
During the later part of August 2016, Divinity managed to line up a quick 4 show tour across Western Canada with none other than the Devin Townsend Project. Starting in Kelowna, B.C., at the Hell Raiser Metalfest, the band could not contain their excitement. The tour also had California atmospheric death metal band, Fallujah, which were also a powerhouse of an act to also support on tour.
In just 4 shows, the band made strong friendships and really connected to the entire crew. It was an amazing quick and dirty tour with one of their biggest influences in music. Good times were had.
The band has pushed to it's fullest and have created a masterpiece of a third full length album. The Immortalist trilogy is complete and the boys in the band couldn't be happier with how it has all turned out. The album has been supported with a Western Canadian tour and a special show in Quebec for the Trois Riviere Metal Fest.
After that, the band went into heavy writing and recording mode and really taking their time in the process of it all. The band decided to take on the recording the drums entirely on their own where in the past the band would book studio time and work with an audio engineer to capture the 18+ microphones that usually are being used when recording Brett's massive drum kit.
In early 2019, Brett was ready to record his drums and the band had gathered all of the recording gear necessary and managed to track and edit professional quality drums. This was a major achievement for the band because now all instruments and players are able to record themselves and avoid huge studio costs that the band always struggled to cover.

He then happened to hear Metallica on the radio one day and was instantly hooked. He gathered up as much money as he could and bought a guitar (it was a piece of crap). I would go to jams and see them play and I wanted to play! 14 years ago, my good friend sold me my first bass for $40. I started learning Iron maiden and Black sabbath and I have kept going ever since! Now, I am well versed in both guitar and bass.

We had such a blast doing the Gettin' Hard in Nate's Backyard podcast with Nate Reno! ...and we can't wait to bring him on the road with us as our main sound tech. too! Take a listen and hear some interesting stories from our past, present, and future.
This Podcast was recorded September 12th, 2017 in The Bunker at Get Hard Studios in Calgary, AB, Canada.
We're stoked to announce the addition of a 2nd guitarist to our line-up - Gord Olson! Gord is a dedicated and talented 7-string shredder who is endorsed by Schecter Guitars and is also currently active in numerous projects such as Calgary act Ye Goat-Herd Gods, and Demisery, a death metal collaboration with Keith Merrow of Alluvial and Conquering Dystopia.
Sean Jenkins, singer in the band said,
“The band had originally asked Gord to join the band about 4 years ago but the timing and commitment was not able to work out. Recently, about 2 months ago, Gord was hanging out at a jam session and by the end of it we all sort of realized that the opportunity for Gord to learn some songs and start jamming was now possible. Gord really took bull by the horns and has learned a 10-song live set in a matter of just weeks… and he's nailing it; really adding another huge layer of thickness and some killer leads too! We couldn't be more stoked to have dual guitarists again!”

Divinity are an insanely talented band who’ve just released an amazing album that just isn’t getting the attention it deserves. I was listening to the full album yesterday on my iPod… and “fucking wow” is still about all I can come up with. It’s it’s complex, it’s progressive, it’s deep, it’s brutal, it’s shreddy, it’s hooky, it’s artsy… it’s everything you (I) want a metal record to be. Every musician in the band is top-notch, including vocalist Sean Jenkins with whom I’m especially impressed (this from a guy who ordinarily doesn’t focus on vocals).
Canada's metal wizards Divinity have just released a vibrant, explosive video for "Lay In The Bed You've Made," from the band's Candlelight Records debut The Singularity.
- GuitarWorld.com (Video Premiere)
DIVINITY: F*CKING WOW
...Divinity definitely make my balls quiver.
Technical death metal fans will find Divinity to be a hybrid of several genres that all have a hand in formulating the band’s sonic reverence. From soft piano to sky-raising clean vocals, every attempt is made to show that monotony and predictability is not in Divinity’s DNA.
Divinity is easily among Canada’s elite bands (along with Into Eternity for example) that have that the new ‘Western Canadian’ sound that morphs Death, Thrash, Prog and crazy chops into one sweet package.
The Life of DIVINITY
Divinity is made up of 5 musicians with 4 of them being original members of nearly 20 years of playing together. They've been described as Progressive Death Metal and compared to bands such as Soilwork, Strapping Young Lad, Death, and Fear Factory.
- Sean Jenkins - Vocals
- Jeff Waite - Vocals
- James Duncan - Guitars
- Brett Duncan - Drums
- Keith Branston - Bass
Divinity, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, started in 1997 and began playing live shows in 1999. In 2001, the band released its first EP album called "Intensify" which recieved a lot of local (Canadian) praise after sending in a couple songs to BWBK's Knuckletrack CD sampler. A music video was released for the song "World of Pain" in 2003 and the band played local shows building it's show experience.
Fast forward to 2007, Divinity independantly releases their first full-length album called "Allegory" and is picked up by Nuclear Blast Records just 3 months after the independant release. Obviously, this was a major turning point for the band!
In 2008, Divinity took on it's first major tour by joining the Summer Slaughter Canada tour. This gave them the opportunity to connect to high-calibre booking agents and other acts such as Dying Fetus, Whitechapel, and Necrophagist.
Then in 2009, Divinity spent it's time creating their 2nd full-length album called "The Singularity" which was released under Candlelight Records with a very positive response from numerous reviewers and listeners.
Since the release of The Singularity, Divinity has toured Canada numerous times over and has received countless support and praise from around the world.
The band is currently in the middle of releasing a trilogy EP concept called 'The Immortalist' with Part 1 availabe now at all digital music stores, Part 2 coming out in early February and Part 3 slated for a release later in this year.
We have decided to release a full-length album in a different way. We are going to create a 3 part series of 4-song EP albums that will develop a full length concept album we are calling 'The Immortalist'. The EP albums will be released in digital format only to build up to a physical special edition that will contain all 3 parts in one full length CD along with a full digipak of media such as a video DVD and a full color booklet that illustrates the lyrics and The Immortalist storyline.
Each song within the series will develop the storyline of the main character in 'The Immortalist' trilogy. We will create an online marketing focus on each song for a time period of 6 weeks. This means the Divinity website, Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube pages would only promote and discuss the particular song we are focusing on. We will post videos, graphics, lyrics, song meaning, storyline and as much marketing as possible within the 6 week time period for each song.
The overall idea is to have each song we produce for the series to have a focused marketing push on building the storyline of our album concept with a huge build up to the final package that is meant to contain everything to do with the Trilogy along with a few special items to make it worthwhile to own a physical copy.
Where we are at now
Recently, we decided to put our new album into an Indiegogo campaign to build up funding for the entire recording process of the remaining songs. After a 45 day campaign, we ended up getting around $6000 in contributions and we will be using this money to fund the rest of the recording.
Part 1 of the trilogy has been released on all major digital music stores since April 22, 2013. Part 2 will be released February 5th, 2016. Part 3 is being written and recorded throughout 2016 and is looking to be completed and released this year as well.
